As any major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a clamor for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.
Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title got ignored recently
- Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
